David Eisner and Avery Saltzman, co-Artistic Directors of the Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company, present CIRCUMCISE ME!, the hilarious and moving story of one man’s quest for spiritual enlightenment. CIRCUMCISE ME! will run at the Jane Mallett Theatre, St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, from October 25 - November 6, 2011.
Written by and starring Yisrael Campbell, CIRCUMCISE ME! is his true story of growing up Roman Catholic and converting to Judaism, not once but three times: first from Catholic to reform Judaism, then from reform to conservative Judaism, and finally from conservative to orthodox Judaism.
Born Christopher Campbell in Penn Wynne, Pennsylvania, Yisrael Campbell is the son of an ex-nun and a Catholic schoolteacher. His spiritual journey began after a misspent youth as a drug-drenched teenager in Philadelphia. After studying theatre in New York City, Chris began performing standup comedy and telling his story of recovery and discovery.
A mixture of traditional storytelling and “spiritual” comedy, Chris performed a series of one-man shows while undergoing his three conversions, and circumcisions, to Judaism. “Three circumcisions is not a religious covenant, it’s a fetish.” Poignant, provocative, and powerfully witty, CIRCUMCISE ME! will have women howling with laughter, men squirming in their seats, and everyone standing up to cheer.
